Stay mindful of your environment's influence from "summary" of The Art of Habit Building by Dan Stevens

It's easy to underestimate the impact our environment has on our habits. We often think that our habits are solely a result of our willpower and self-discipline. However, the truth is that our environment plays a significant role in shaping our behaviors. From the people we surround ourselves with to the places we frequent, our environment can either help us build positive habits or hinder our progress. For example, if your goal is to eat healthier, but you constantly find yourself surrounded by junk food in your home or workplace, it will be much harder to stick to your goal. On the other hand, if you make a conscious effort to stock your kitchen with nutritious foods and avoid places that tempt you with unhealthy options, you are more likely to succeed in building a healthy eating habit. Similarly, if you want to exercise more regularly, but your neighborhood doesn't have safe sidewalks or parks, you may struggle to find the motivation to work out. However, if you join a gym or find a workout buddy who holds you accountable, you are more likely to stay consistent with your exercise routine.
  1. You can make intentional choices that support your goals. This may involve decluttering your space, setting boundaries with people who have a negative impact on your habits, or creating a routine that aligns with your desired behaviors. Remember, your environment is not set in stone – you have the power to change it to better serve your habits and ultimately, your well-being.
