Stoicism emphasizes the importance of selfdiscipline from "summary" of Stoicism and the Art of Happiness by Donald Robertson

Stoicism places great emphasis on the cultivation of self-discipline as a means to achieve inner tranquility and freedom from negative emotions. The Stoics believed that by exercising self-control over our thoughts, emotions, and actions, we can attain a state of equanimity even in the face of adversity. This philosophy encourages individuals to develop a sense of mastery over themselves, rather than being driven by external circumstances or the whims of their own passions. Self-discipline is viewed as a virtue that enables us to resist the temptations of immediate gratification and to act in accordance with reason and virtue. By practicing self-discipline, Stoics seek to align their actions with their values and principles, thus living a life that is consistent with their ideals. This requires a constant effort to monitor and regulate one's impulses, desires, and reactions, in order to ensure that they are in harmony with what is truly good and beneficial. Through self-discipline, Stoics aim to cultivate a sense of inner strength and resilience that enables them to face life's challenges with courage and fortitude. By training themselves to endure hardship and discomfort without being overwhelmed by negative emotions, they develop a sense of self-reliance and self-mastery that enables them to navigate life's ups and downs with grace and dignity.
  1. Self-discipline is seen as a key component of the Stoic path to wisdom and happiness. By exercising self-control and self-restraint, individuals can free themselves from the tyranny of their own passions and desires, and attain a state of tranquility and inner peace. This requires a willingness to confront and challenge one's own weaknesses and shortcomings, and to strive for continual self-improvement and growth. In this way, Stoicism offers a practical and effective framework for developing the virtues of character and living a life of integrity and virtue.
