Happiness found within oneself, not external sources from "summary" of Stoic Philosophy of Seneca Essays and Letters by Lucius Annaeus Seneca

The wise man is happy within himself; he is happy in his own possession of happiness. He does not need external sources to find happiness, for he carries it within himself. He is self-sufficient, as his happiness does not depend on anything outside of himself. External sources of happiness are fleeting and unreliable. They are subject to change and can be taken away from us at any moment. The wise man, however, finds true happiness within himself, where it is safe from the uncertainties of the world. The wise man does not seek happiness in wealth, power, or fame. He knows that these things are external and can be lost. True happiness, for him, is found in virtue and wisdom. These are the qualities that he cultivates within himself, and they are the source of his true happiness. The wise man does not rely on external circumstances to be happy. He does not need to be surrounded by luxury or comfort to feel content. His happiness comes from within, from his own inner peace and tranquility. The wise man is content with what he has and does not desire more than he needs. He is grateful for the simple pleasures of life and does not let his happiness depend on external possessions. His happiness is not based on having more, but on being more.
  1. The wise man finds happiness within himself. He does not need external sources to be happy, for he carries it within him. His happiness is based on virtue and wisdom, not on external circumstances. This is the key to true and lasting happiness.
