Avoid overscheduling and allow for downtime from "summary" of Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne,Lisa M. Ross

It can be all too easy in today's fast-paced world to fill our children's schedules to the brim with activities and commitments. From sports practices to music lessons to playdates, our children's days can quickly become packed with little room for rest and relaxation. However, it is important to remember the value of allowing for downtime in our children's lives. When children are constantly on the go, they can become overwhelmed and overstimulated, leading to meltdowns, tantrums, and other behavioral issues. By scheduling in some downtime each day, we give our children the opportunity to decompress, recharge, and simply be kids. This downtime can take many forms, whether it's reading a book, playing outside, or simply engaging in unstructured play. In our society, there is often a pressure to constantly be busy and productive, but it is important to remember that downtime is not wasted time. In fact, downtime is essential for children's development, allowing them the opportunity to explore their interests, cultivate their creativity, and develop important social and emotional skills.
  1. We can help them cultivate a sense of simplicity and balance. We can create a space for them to connect with themselves, their families, and the world around them in a meaningful way. Ultimately, by prioritizing downtime, we can help our children lead happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
