Growing up in the segregated South was a harsh reality for many black children, including myself. From a young age, we were taught that we were inferior to white people and that we had to abide by the rules set by the Jim Crow laws. These laws enforced racial segregation in all aspects of life, from schools to restaurants to public transportation. I remember vividly the separate water fountains and bathrooms for whites and blacks, the back of the bus where black people were expected to sit, and the constant fear of facing violence or discrimination if we dared to challenge the status quo.
