Growing up in the segregated South, I learned early on the importance of family. My family was my rock, my support system in a world that often seemed stacked against us. It was within the walls of my family's home that I first learned about strength, resilience, and the power of standing up for what is right. My grandparents were a major influence on me, teaching me the value of hard work and the importance of treating others with respect. They instilled in me a sense of pride in who I was and where I came from, despite the discrimination and prejudice we faced on a daily basis. My grandparents showed me that no matter how difficult things may seem, we must never lose sight of our values and beliefs. My mother, Leona, was another strong presence in my life.
