The black body is always at risk. There is a belief in this country that your black body is disposable. It is a belief that has been passed down through generations, a belief that has been ingrained in the very foundation of America. The black body is seen as a threat, as something to be feared and controlled. It is a target for violence, a target for oppression, a target for dehumanization. When you are black in America, your body is not your own. It is something to be policed, to be regulated, to be punished. Your body is seen as dangerous, as criminal, as inferior. Your body is not seen as a person, but as a problem to be solved. This devaluation of the black body is systemic, it is institutionalized, it is woven into the fabric of American society.
