Practice selfcompassion during difficult times from "summary" of Resilient by Rick Hanson, PhD,Forrest Hanson

During tough times, it's easy to be hard on yourself. When things go wrong, it's common to start blaming yourself or beating yourself up. Maybe you think you should have known better, or done something differently. But being harsh on yourself in difficult moments only makes things worse. It adds an extra layer of pain on top of an already challenging situation. Instead of being critical of yourself, try practicing self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a friend in need. Acknowledge your suffering without judgment. Recognize that it's okay to feel upset, hurt, or overwhelmed. Validate your emotions and experiences, rather than pushing them away or pretending they don't exist. Self-compassion isn't about making excuses for yourself or letting yourself off the hook. It's about offering yourself the same care and compassion that you would offer to someone you care about.
