Trust is the bedrock of effective teamwork from "summary" of Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick M. Lencioni

Trust is the bedrock of effective teamwork. Without it, all efforts to build a strong team are doomed to fail. Trust is the foundation upon which all other aspects of teamwork are built. When team members trust each other, they are able to communicate openly and honestly, without fear of judgment or reprisal. This creates an environment where ideas can be freely shared, problems can be openly discussed, and solutions can be collaboratively developed. When trust is lacking within a team, communication breaks down, misunderstandings arise, and conflicts escalate. Team members become guarded and defensive, unwilling to take risks or share their true thoughts and feelings. This leads to a lack of cohesion and a breakdown in teamwork, as individuals become more focused on protecting themselves rather than working towards the common goal. Building trust within a team takes time and effort. It requires open and honest communication, a willingness to be vulnerable, and a commitment to truly understanding and supporting one another. Trust is not something that can be mandated or demanded; it must be earned through consistent actions and behaviors that demonstrate integrity, reliability, and respect for others. In order to foster trust within a team, leaders must lead by example. They must demonstrate trust in their team members, empower them to take risks and make decisions, and provide them with the support and resources they need to succeed. Leaders must also be willing to admit their own mistakes, take responsibility for their actions, and seek feedback from others in order to continuously improve and grow.
  1. Trust is the glue that holds a team together. It is what allows a group of individuals to come together as a cohesive unit, working towards a common purpose and achieving shared goals. Without trust, a team will always be limited in its potential and effectiveness. Trust is not simply a nice-to-have; it is a non-negotiable requirement for any team that hopes to succeed.
