The circulatory system transports nutrients and oxygen throughout the body from "summary" of NCERT Exemplar Problems-Solutions BIOLOGY class 12th by Arihant Experts

The circulatory system is responsible for the transportation of essential nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. This system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The heart serves as the central pump that propels blood throughout the body. It has four chambers - two atria and two ventricles, which work together to ensure the circulation of blood. The blood vessels, including arteries, veins, and capillaries, form a network that carries blood to different parts of the body. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart, while veins transport oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that connect arteries and veins, allowing for the exchange of nutrients and oxygen with cells. Blood plays a crucial role in the circulatory system as it carries nutrients and oxygen to cells and removes waste products. It consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a protein that binds to oxygen, enabling the transport of oxygen to tissues. White blood cells help fight infections, while platelets aid in blood clotting. The circulation of blood in the body occurs in two main circuits - pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation. In pulmonary circulation, blood is pumped from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart, allowing for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. In systemic circulation, oxygen-rich blood is pumped from the heart to the rest of the body and oxygen-poor blood is returned to the heart.
  1. The circulatory system plays a vital role in maintaining the proper functioning of the body by ensuring the distribution of nutrients and oxygen to cells and the removal of waste products. It is a complex network that works seamlessly to support various physiological processes and maintain homeostasis.
