Weakness exploitation from "summary" of Modern Chess Strategy by Ludek Pachman

Weak squares and other weaknesses in the opponent's position are valuable only in so far as they can be exploited. The most common way of doing this is by attacking the weak points with pieces or pawns. In the course of the attack, the enemy pieces can be driven away, permitting a further advance. In other words, attacking the weak points often leads to the creation of new weak points which can be exploited in their turn. The player who has weak points in his camp must not only defend them but also be prepared to counterattack. An attack against a weak point may be parried by a counterattack against another weak point. This is a good method of defending because it puts pressure on the enemy position. The player who has no weak points in his position has nothing to worry about. It is only when some weakness is present that the opponent can hope to exploit it. The exploitation of weak points is closely linked with the concept of mobility. A mobile piece can attack weak points and create threats much more easily than an immobile one. The more mobile your pieces are, the easier it is to exploit the opponent's weaknesses. Therefore, it is important to keep your pieces active and ready to pounce on any weaknesses that appear in the opponent's position. When attacking weak points, it is important to keep in mind the principle of concentration of forces. It is not enough to attack a weak point with one piece; it is better to attack it with several pieces. This puts more pressure on the weak point and makes it harder for the opponent to defend. By concentrating your forces on the weak points, you increase the chances of successfully exploiting them.
  1. Weakness exploitation is a fundamental concept in chess strategy. It involves attacking the opponent's weak points with active and mobile pieces, while also being prepared to counterattack if necessary. By concentrating your forces on the weak points and keeping your pieces mobile, you can increase your chances of success in exploiting the opponent's weaknesses.
