Be mindful of our reactions and responses to situations from "summary" of Mindfulness in Plain English by Henepola Gunaratana
When we talk about mindfulness, we are referring to awareness. It is the direct knowing of what you are doing while you are doing it. Awareness and mindfulness are not the same. Awareness is like a spotlight. It highlights whatever it shines upon. Mindfulness is a more diffuse lamp. It casts a light on our whole field of experience. Mindfulness is a mental ability that you can cultivate. It is a tool for living your life more fully. Mindfulness is the key to unshackling yourself from your automatic reactions. The mindfulness we are striving to develop is a careful, caring, nonjudgmental awareness. This kind of awareness can be applied to anything you do. It can be applied to anything you are. It is a way of paying attention to whatever is happening. It is a way of going beyond discursive thinking. It is a way of attending to the present moment. It is a way of looking at your own mind. When you are mindful, you are taking your experience in through your senses. You are not thinking about it or reacting to it. You are simply aware of it. When you are mindful, your thinking mind is very relaxed. You are not grasping at the present moment. You are not avoiding it. You are simply living it. This means that most of the time you are not lost in thought. You are not ruminating about the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness is a technique for paying attention. It is a technique for clear seeing. It is a technique for examining your experience. It is a technique for investigating reality. It is a technique for testing the truth of concepts. It is a technique for living fully. Mindfulness is a technique for being aware of what is happening. It is a technique for seeing what is going on in your mind. It is a technique for seeing the nature of your own mind. Mindfulness is a technique for knowing yourself. It is a technique for seeing the content of your own mind. It is a technique for understanding the processes of your own mind. It is a technique for seeing how your mind works. It is a technique for testing the truth of your beliefs. It is a technique for understanding your own motivations. In short, mindfulness is a technique for examining the whole of your experience.Similar Posts
