Cognitive control impacts our decisionmaking from "summary" of Mind Over Mind by Chris Berdik

Cognitive control plays a crucial role in the decisions we make on a daily basis. It helps us weigh options, consider consequences, and resist impulses. This ability to regulate our thoughts and actions is what separates us from other species. However, our cognitive control is not always foolproof. It can be influenced by a variety of factors, such as stress, fatigue, or distractions. When our cognitive control is compromised, our decision-making abilities can suffer as a result. One way cognitive control impacts our decision-making is by helping us stay focused on our goals. By maintaining our attention and blocking out distractions, we are better able to make choices that align with our long-term objectives. Conversely, when our cognitive control is weakened, we may struggle to resist immediate gratification or succumb to impulsive behaviors. This can lead to decisions that are not in our best interests in the long run. Furthermore, cognitive control also plays a role in helping us regulate our emotions. When faced with a challenging decision, our ability to manage our feelings can impact the choices we ultimately make. For example, if we are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, we may be more likely to make decisions based on fear or uncertainty rather than logic or reason. On the other hand, when we are able to regulate our emotions effectively, we are better equipped to make decisions that are rational and well thought out.
  1. Cognitive control serves as a mental filter that influences the way we process information and make choices. It helps us focus on what is important, resist distractions, and regulate our emotions. When our cognitive control is strong, we are more likely to make decisions that align with our goals and values. However, when it is compromised, our decision-making abilities can be hindered, leading to choices that may not serve us well in the long term.
