Negotiations for release from "summary" of Long Walk to Freedom with Connections by Nelson Mandela

The negotiations for my release began in earnest in March 1989. For almost four years, I had been corresponding with the government through Kobie Coetsee, the Minister of Justice. Our meetings had been sporadic, but we had managed to establish a level of trust between us. Our discussions were always cordial, and we both understood that we were working towards a common goal – my freedom. Over the course of those years, we had managed to make some progress. The government had agreed to certain conditions, such as allowing me to be moved from Victor Verster Prison to a house in Cape Town. This move was a significant step forward, as it allowed me to have more freedom of movement and access to the outside world. However, there were still many obstacles to overcome. The government was hesitant to release me unconditionally, fearing that it would embolden other political prisoners and undermine their authority. They also wanted me to renounce violence as a means of achieving our goals, something I was not willing to do. Despite these challenges, we continued to negotiate in good faith. We both knew that a solution had to be found, and that compromise would be necessary on both sides. It was a delicate dance, with each step bringing us closer to our goal of my release. Finally, in February 1990, after months of intense negotiations, an agreement was reached. The government agreed to release me unconditionally, and I agreed to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict in South Africa. It was a momentous occasion, one that marked the beginning of a new chapter in our country's history. The negotiations for my release were not easy, but they were necessary. They required patience, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom. In the end, our efforts paid off, and I walked out of prison a free man, ready to continue the struggle for justice and equality in South Africa.
