Harness the power of habits from "summary" of Limitless by Jim Kwik
Habits are like pathways in our brain that we have traveled so many times that they have become automatic. They require less mental energy than trying something new or making a conscious decision. By harnessing the power of habits, we can make positive changes in our lives without constantly relying on willpower. The key to forming a new habit is repetition. The more we repeat a behavior, the stronger the neural pathway associated with that behavior becomes. This is why it's important to start small when trying to create a new habit. By breaking down the desired behavior into smaller, manageable steps, we can gradually build up the neural pathways that support that behavior. Another important aspect of forming a new habit is consistency. It's not enough to do something once in a while and expect it to become a habit. We need to make a conscious effort to repeat the behavior consistently until it becomes automatic. This means setting a specific time and place for the behavior, and sticking to it every day. In addition to repetition and consistency, it's also helpful to associate the new behavior with an existing habit. This is known as habit stacking. By linking the new behavior to something we already do on a regular basis, we can piggyback off the existing neural pathways and make it easier for the new habit to take hold.- By harnessing the power of habits, we can make positive changes in our lives that are sustainable in the long term. By understanding how habits work and implementing strategies to create new ones, we can unlock our full potential and become limitless in our ability to achieve our goals.
