Deception can lead to a destructive cycle from "summary" of Leadership and Self-deception by Arbinger Institute

When we deceive ourselves or others, we start a chain reaction that can spiral out of control. This cycle of deception is like a snowball rolling downhill, gaining momentum and size as it goes. The initial act of deception may seem small or insignificant, but it sets off a series of events that can have major consequences. As we deceive ourselves, we begin to see the world in a distorted way. We start to view others as obstacles or threats, rather than as valuable individuals with their own needs and perspectives. This distorted view leads us to treat others in ways that are harmful or disrespectful, further fueling the cycle of deception. In turn, when others sense that we are being deceptive or insincere, they are less likely to trust us or cooperate with us. This lack of trust can breed resentment and hostility, creating a toxic environment where relationships deteriorate and conflicts escalate. As the cycle of deception continues, the damage accumulates, making it harder to repair the harm that has been done. Trust is eroded, communication breaks down, and individuals become entrenched in their positions, making it difficult to find common ground or resolve conflicts.
  1. The destructive cycle of deception can have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only our relationships with others but also our own sense of self-worth and integrity. Breaking out of this cycle requires a willingness to confront our own self-deception, take responsibility for our actions, and work towards building trust and mutual respect with others. Only then can we begin to repair the damage and create a more positive and productive environment for ourselves and those around us.
