As a young black boy growing up in apartheid South Africa, I quickly learned that knowledge was power in a world designed to keep people like me ignorant and oppressed. The white rulers of my country wanted us to remain uneducated so that we would never question or challenge their authority. They believed that an ignorant population would be easier to control and manipulate. But I refused to accept my fate as a second-class citizen destined to live a life of poverty and servitude. I knew that the key to breaking free from the chains of oppression lay in education. I devoured books whenever I could, thirsting for knowledge that would empower me to rise above the circumstances of my birth. Through education, I learned about the world beyond the confines of my township. I discovered the existence of a vast universe filled with possibilities and opportunities that were denied to me simply because of the color of my skin.
