In the midst of the brutal apartheid regime in South Africa, I found myself faced with a reality that was both deeply personal and widely shared among my people. The trauma of discrimination and oppression was not just something that affected me alone, but was a collective burden that weighed heavily on the entire black community. It was a burden that we all carried, each in our own way, as we navigated a world that was designed to keep us down. As a young boy growing up in the poverty-stricken ghetto of Alexandra, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of apartheid on my family and community. The constant fear, the daily struggles for survival, the indignities heaped upon us simply because of the color of our skin - all of these experiences left deep scars on my psyche and on the collective consciousness of my people. But as I came of age and began to understand the true nature of the system that oppressed us, I realized that confronting our trauma was essential for our survival and our liberation. We could not simply ignore the pain and suffering that we endured, nor could we allow ourselves to be consumed by bitterness and despair.
