Using humor as a coping mechanism from "summary" of It's Trevor Noah: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

One of the key strategies that I have employed to navigate the challenges of my upbringing is humor. I have always believed that laughter has the power to lighten even the heaviest of burdens. Growing up in a society where my mere existence was a crime, laughter became my armor, my shield against the harsh realities of the world around me. I learned early on that humor could be a powerful tool for survival. By making light of difficult situations, I was able to distance myself from the pain and find moments of joy in the midst of chaos. Whether it was cracking jokes about my mother's strict discipline or finding ways to make light of the racism and prejudice that surrounded me, humor became my coping mechanism, my way of reclaiming agency in a world that sought to strip me of my humanity. Through humor, I was able to connect with others, to bridge the divides that separated us. In a country torn apart by apartheid, laughter became a universal language that transcended race, class, and culture. It allowed me to forge relationships, to find common ground with people who, on the surface, seemed so different from me. But humor was not just a tool for survival, it was also a source of strength and resilience. In the face of adversity, laughter gave me the courage to keep moving forward, to never give up hope. It was a reminder that, no matter how dire the circumstances, there was always room for joy, for laughter, for love. So, as I reflect on my journey and the role that humor has played in shaping it, I am reminded of the power of laughter to heal, to unite, to transform. In a world that is often dark and cruel, humor is like a ray of light, shining through the darkness and reminding us that, no matter what life throws at us, we always have the power to choose joy.
