Social norms have a powerful impact on our behavior. They serve as a guide for how we should act in various situations, influencing our decisions without us even realizing it. When we see others behaving in a certain way, we are more likely to follow suit, as we believe that this behavior is the norm and therefore acceptable. One study that exemplifies the power of social norms was conducted in a hotel. In an attempt to reduce towel theft, researchers placed different signs in the hotel rooms. The first sign simply asked guests to reuse their towels to help save the environment. The second sign, however, included specific data on how many other guests in that room had reused their towels.
