The Advocate General of a State is a legal advisor to the State Government. It is a constitutional post which is equivalent to the Attorney General of India at the Centre. The Advocate General is appointed by the Governor of the State and holds office during the pleasure of the Governor. The Advocate General must be a person who is qualified to be appointed as a Judge of a High Court. The Advocate General has the right to speak and take part in the proceedings of the State Legislature, but he does not have the right to vote. He can participate in the meetings of the Cabinet, but cannot be a member of the Cabinet. The Advocate General has the duty to give advice to the State Government on legal matters referred to him.
