Practice active listening from "summary" of Inclusion by Jennifer Brown

To truly connect with others and foster a culture of inclusion, it is essential to practice active listening. This means more than just hearing the words that someone is saying - it involves fully engaging with the speaker, making a conscious effort to understand their perspective, and showing empathy and respect for their feelings and experiences. Active listening requires setting aside distractions and giving the speaker your full attention. This means putting away your phone, closing your laptop, and making eye contact to show that you are fully present and engaged in the conversation. It also involves being aware of your body language, such as nodding and providing verbal cues like "I see" or "That makes sense," to show that you are actively listening and processing what the speaker is saying. In addition, active listening involves asking thoughtful questions to clarify points, show interest, and encourage the speaker to expand on their thoughts and feelings. By asking open-ended questions and seeking to understand the speaker's perspective, you can deepen your connection and build trust with others. Reflecting back what you have heard, paraphrasing key points, and summarizing the speaker's main ideas can also demonstrate that you are actively listening and trying to understand their perspective. Furthermore, active listening requires setting aside your own assumptions, biases, and judgments, and approaching the conversation with an open mind and a willingness to learn from the speaker. By suspending your own agenda and truly listening to the speaker's words and emotions, you can create a safe space for open dialogue, mutual understanding, and meaningful connections.
  1. Practicing active listening is a powerful way to cultivate empathy, build trust, and foster an inclusive environment where all voices are heard and valued. By making a conscious effort to listen actively and show respect for others' perspectives, you can create a culture of inclusion where everyone feels seen, heard, and respected.
