When we decide to make a change in our behavior, it often seems like a private matter. We think that we can simply set a goal for ourselves and work towards it on our own. However, what we fail to realize is that making change visible to others can actually enhance our accountability. When we keep our efforts to change hidden from others, we can easily make excuses or rationalize our actions. We can tell ourselves that it's okay to slip up or not fully commit to the change because no one else is watching. This lack of external accountability allows us to let ourselves off the hook too easily. On the other hand, when we make our change efforts visible to others, we create a sense of external pressure to follow through. When we know that others are aware of what we are trying to achieve, we are more likely to stick to our commitments. The fear of letting others down can be a powerful motivator for us to stay on track and not give up when faced with obstacles. Moreover, when we make our change visible to others, we also open ourselves up to receiving feedback and support. Others can offer us insights, encouragement, and assistance that we may not have considered on our own.
