Happiness is linked to satisfying basic psychological needs from "summary" of If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Happy? by Raj Raghunathan

In our quest for happiness, it is important to understand that our level of happiness is closely tied to the extent to which we are able to satisfy our basic psychological needs. These needs, as outlined by self-determination theory, include the need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Autonomy refers to our sense of control over our own lives, the feeling that we are making choices that align with our values and interests. Competence, on the other hand, pertains to our ability to effectively navigate the challenges and opportunities that come our way. Feeling competent boosts our self-esteem and enhances our overall well-being. Relatedness, the third basic psychological need, involves our connections with others and the sense of belonging we derive from these relationships. When we feel connected to others, when we experience love, support, and understanding, our happiness levels tend to soar. Conversely, when these needs are not adequately met, we may find ourselves feeling unfulfilled, discontent, and even depressed. It is therefore essential to prioritize the satisfaction of these basic psychological needs in order to cultivate lasting happiness in our lives. Fulfilling our need for autonomy can involve setting meaningful goals, engaging in activities that align with our values, and asserting our boundaries when necessary. By taking ownership of our choices and actions, we can create a sense of empowerment and agency that contributes to our overall well-being. Similarly, nurturing our sense of competence requires us to continuously challenge ourselves, learn new skills, and seek out opportunities for growth and development. When we push ourselves beyond our comfort zones and overcome obstacles, we build confidence and resilience that can enhance our happiness.
  1. Attending to our need for relatedness involves cultivating strong, supportive relationships with others. This can include spending quality time with loved ones, expressing gratitude and kindness, and seeking out social connections that bring joy and fulfillment into our lives. By fostering a sense of belonging and connection, we can experience profound levels of happiness and contentment. Ultimately, by recognizing and addressing these basic psychological needs, we can pave the way for a more fulfilling and joyful existence.
