Cultural humility is vital in allyship from "summary" of I'm Still Here by Austin Channing Brown
In order to be a true ally, one must be willing to approach the work of justice with a posture of humility. This means acknowledging that there is much to learn and unlearn, especially when it comes to understanding and dismantling systems of oppression. Cultural humility requires a willingness to listen to those who have been marginalized and oppressed, to truly hear their experiences and perspectives without defensiveness or dismissal. Allyship that lacks cultural humility often falls short, as it can be tainted by the desire to be seen as "good" or "woke" rather than a genuine commitment to justice and equity. When one approaches allyship with humility, they understand that they do not have all the answers or solutions, and that they must be willing to follow the leadership of those who have been most impacted by injustice. Cultural humility also involves a willingness to confront one's own biases and privileges, to constantly interrogate how one's own identity and experiences shape their understanding of the world. It requires a willingness to sit with discomfort and uncertainty, to confront the ways in which one has benefitted from systems of oppression, and to actively work to dismantle those systems. Allyship that is rooted in cultural humility is not about performative gestures or seeking validation; it is about a deep commitment to standing in solidarity with those who are marginalized and oppressed. It is about recognizing that true allyship requires ongoing learning, growth, and self-reflection. It is about understanding that the work of justice is messy, complex, and ongoing, and that one must be willing to show up with humility, openness, and a willingness to be challenged and transformed.Similar Posts
