Multitasking actually decreases productivity and focus from "summary" of Hyperfocus by Chris Bailey
When we try to do several things at once, we're not actually doing multiple tasks simultaneously. Instead, our brain is rapidly switching between tasks, which consumes mental energy and decreases our overall productivity. This "task-switching" tax is so severe that it can reduce our IQ by up to 10 points, making us temporarily less intelligent than if we were stoned. Multitasking also affects our ability to focus on the task at hand. When we're juggling multiple tasks, we're not fully present in any one of them. Our attention is divided, and as a result, our performance on each task suffers. This divided attention prevents us from entering a state of hyperfocus, where we can do our best work and truly immerse ourselves in a task. In a study conducted by Stanford University, heavy multitaskers were found to be more easily distracted, less able to ignore irrelevant information, and less efficient at switching between tasks compared to light multitaskers. This demonstrates that the more we try to do at once, the worse we become at managing our attention and focusing on the task at hand. To combat the negative effects of multitasking, we must train our brain to single-task and focus on one thing at a time. By dedicating our full attention to a single task, we can enter a state of hyperfocus where we are fully engaged and able to produce our best work. This requires setting boundaries, eliminating distractions, and practicing mindfulness to stay present and focused on the task at hand.- Multitasking may seem like a way to get more done in less time, but in reality, it hinders our productivity and impairs our ability to focus. By prioritizing single-tasking and entering a state of hyperfocus, we can maximize our efficiency and achieve greater success in our work and personal lives.
