Our view of human nature shapes our society from "summary" of Humandkind: Sejarah Penuh Harapan by Rutger Bregman

Our beliefs about human nature have a profound impact on the way we structure our society. If we subscribe to the idea that people are inherently selfish and aggressive, we will design systems that seek to control and restrain these qualities. This can lead to the creation of institutions that prioritize security and punishment over trust and cooperation. On the other hand, if we believe that humans are fundamentally good and cooperative, we are more likely to build societies that promote empathy and solidarity. This can result in the development of systems that prioritize equality and mutual support. The way we perceive human nature influences everything from our political structures to our economic systems. For centuries, the prevailing view of human nature has been shaped by the idea of the "Hobbesian trap" – the notion that people are naturally self-interested and that society can only function through the imposition of external controls. This belief has been used to justify everything from authoritarian governments to cutthroat capitalist economies. However, recent research in fields such as psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience has challenged this pessimistic view of humanity. Studies have shown that cooperation and altruism are deeply ingrained in our evolutionary history, and that humans have a natural inclination towards social connection and mutual aid. When we recognize the positive aspects of human nature, we can create societies that are more compassionate, equitable, and sustainable. By fostering trust and cooperation, we can build systems that prioritize the well-being of all members of society, rather than just a privileged few.
  1. Our view of human nature shapes not only our society, but also our own behavior. If we believe that people are inherently selfish, we may be less likely to act in ways that benefit others. However, if we embrace the idea that humans are capable of great kindness and compassion, we are more likely to engage in actions that promote the common good. By understanding and celebrating the inherent goodness of humanity, we can create a world that is more just, peaceful, and harmonious.
