Humankind: A Hopeful History (originally titled Humankind: A Hopeful History of Africa, the Middle East, and Beyond) by academic Rutger Bregman tells the story of human history through an optimistic lens. The book examines the past to better understand our present and future. Bregman posits that global events can be best understood and explained by our shared humanity and our capacity to cooperate. He explores how progress comes from humanity working together, and that understanding the variety of human emotions and behaviors is key in order to reach true understanding. The book also looks at controversial topics such as slavery, war, and genocide to help readers draw their own conclusions. In the end, Bregman calls on those who have power to help further human progress and believes that looking at our past with hope is the best way to achieve it.
