Model effective communication skills from "summary" of How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber,Elaine Mazlish
When we talk about modeling effective communication skills, we're really talking about leading by example. It's about showing our children how we want them to communicate with us and others. Our children are always watching and learning from us, even when we don't realize it. For instance, if we want our children to listen to us when we speak, we need to show them what good listening looks like. This means making eye contact, nodding our heads, and responding appropriately to what they're saying. By doing this, we're demonstrating to our children the importance of active listening and showing them how they can do the same. Modeling effective communication skills also involves being mindful of our tone and body language. Children are very perceptive and can pick up on subtle cues in our nonverbal communication. If we're yelling or using harsh words, our children are likely to mimic that behavior. On the other hand, if we speak calmly and respectfully, our children will learn to do the same. It's important to remember that communication is a two-way street. We can't just tell our children how to communicate effectively; we also need to show them through our own actions. By being a positive role model for our children, we can help them develop the skills they need to navigate the world around them.- Modeling effective communication skills is about practicing what we preach. It's about embodying the values and behaviors we want to instill in our children. By being mindful of how we communicate and making an effort to show our children the right way to communicate, we can help them become confident, empathetic communicators in their own right.
