Understand color theory from "summary" of How to Get Dressed by Alison Freer

Color theory is one of those subjects that sounds fancy and intimidating when you first hear about it, but it's actually pretty simple once you break it down. At its core, color theory is just a set of guidelines that help you figure out which colors look good together and which ones clash. Understanding color theory can be a game changer in the way you put together outfits, because it can help you create combinations that are visually appealing and harmonious. The most basic concept in color theory is the color wheel, which is a circular diagram that shows the relationship between different colors. There are three primary colors – red, yellow, and blue – which are considered the building blocks of all other colors. When you mix two primary colors together, you get secondary colors like orange, green, and purple. And when you mix a primary color with a secondary color, you get tertiary colors like red-orange, yellow-green, and blue-purple. Another important concept in color theory is the idea of color harmony, which is the idea that certain colors look good together because they create a pleasing visual effect. There are several different types of color harmony, including complementary colors (colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel), analogous colors (colors that are next to each other on the color wheel), and triadic colors (colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel). Understanding color theory can also help you figure out which colors look best on you based on your skin tone, hair color, and eye color. For example, people with warm undertones tend to look good in earthy tones like reds, oranges, and yellows, while people with cool undertones tend to look good in jewel tones like blues, greens, and purples.
  1. Understanding color theory is all about learning how to use color to your advantage when putting together outfits. By following some basic guidelines and experimenting with different color combinations, you can create looks that are not only stylish and on-trend, but also make you feel confident and put-together.
