Successful communication hinges on the proper performance of speech acts from "summary" of How to Do Things with Words by John Langshaw Austin,J. L. Austin

In order for communication to be successful, speech acts must be performed correctly. Speech acts are not just about conveying information, but also about performing actions through speech. When we speak, we are not just uttering words, but also performing acts that have the power to bring about change in the world. For example, when we make a promise, we are not just saying that we will do something in the future; we are actually committing ourselves to a course of action. Similarly, when we apologize, we are not just expressing regret; we are also acknowledging our responsibility and seeking forgiveness. In this way, speech acts have the power to shape our relationships with others and influence the course of events. When speech acts are performed incorrectly, communication breaks down. If a promise is not kept, trust is eroded. If an apology is insincere, resentment may linger. In order for communication to be effective, speech acts must be performed with precision and care. Furthermore, different speech acts have different illocutionary forces – that is, they are intended to achieve different effects. For example, a question is intended to elicit information, while a command is intended to compel action. Understanding the illocutionary force of a speech act is crucial for interpreting its meaning and responding appropriately.
  1. Successful communication hinges on the proper performance of speech acts. By recognizing the power of speech acts to shape our relationships and influence our interactions with others, we can strive to communicate more effectively and meaningfully.
