Children thrive in environments that encourage curiosity from "summary" of How Children Learn by John Caldwell Holt

In any kind of environment, children seem to thrive when they are encouraged to be curious. When they are not, they soon become passive, bored, and indifferent. They stop learning. Curiosity is so powerful a force that whenever we stop to look at something that catches our attention, we automatically become more alert and observant. We are opened up and in motion. In many kinds of environments, children are not able to follow their own interests or explore the world around them. The things they are told to pay attention to are often not interesting. They are not encouraged to ask questions or to seek for answers. They are not given the chance to try things out, to see what happens. Instead of being able to discover and learn, children are required to listen passively and remember. The kind of environment that encourages curiosity is one where children have the freedom to explore, to follow their interests, to ask questions, and to seek for answers. In such an environment, children are active and engaged. They are excited about what they are learning. They are constantly discovering new things and making connections between what they know and what they are learning. When children are encouraged to be curious, they are more likely to develop a love for learning that will stay with them throughout their lives. They will be better equipped to face challenges and solve problems. They will be more confident and independent. They will be more creative and innovative. They will be more successful in school and in life.
