Health disparities must be addressed within the feminist movement from "summary" of Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall
Addressing health disparities within the feminist movement is imperative because failing to do so perpetuates inequality and undermines the very essence of feminism. When we talk about feminism, we must remember that it is not just about fighting for gender equality in the workplace or in politics. It is also about advocating for the well-being of all women, especially those who face multiple layers of oppression. Health disparities affect women from marginalized communities disproportionately, yet these issues are often sidelined in mainstream feminist discourse. This neglect reflects a failure to acknowledge the interconnectedness of different forms of oppression. It is impossible to separate gender inequality from racial, economic, or health disparities – they are all interconnected and must be addressed collectively. By excluding discussions on health disparities from the feminist movement, we are essentially leaving behind some of the most vulnerable women in society. Women who are struggling to access adequate healthcare, women who are more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses, women who are at a higher risk of maternal mortality – these are the women who need our solidarity and support the most. If feminism is truly about uplifting all women and dismantling systems of oppression, then it must center the experiences of those who are most marginalized. This means actively working to address health disparities within the feminist movement, advocating for policies that prioritize the health and well-being of all women, regardless of their race, class, or background.- The fight for gender equality cannot be separated from the fight for health justice. To truly create a more equitable society, we must recognize the intersectionality of different forms of oppression and work towards dismantling them all. It is only by addressing health disparities within the feminist movement that we can create a more inclusive and effective movement for all women.
