The civil war following Caesar's death plunged Rome into chaos from "summary" of History of Julius Caesar by Napoleon III (Emperor of the French)

The assassination of Julius Caesar was a catastrophic event that sent shockwaves throughout the Roman Empire. With Caesar's death, the fragile peace that he had maintained was shattered, and the inevitable power struggle that ensued plunged Rome into a state of utter chaos. The power vacuum left by Caesar's assassination sparked a civil war among his former allies and enemies, each vying for control of the empire. Octavian, Caesar's adopted heir, allied himself with Mark Antony and Lepidus to form the Second Triumvirate, while Caesar's assassins, led by Brutus and Cassius, gathered their forces in the east. The conflict between the Second Triumvirate and the forces of Brutus and Cassius culminated in the Battle of Philippi, where the conspirators were defeated and forced to flee. However, the victory of the Second Triumvirate did not bring about peace. Instead, it further fueled the flames of civil war as Octavian turned on his former allies, Lepidus and Mark Antony, in his quest for sole power. The ensuing conflict between Octavian and Antony culminated in the Battle of Actium, where Octavian emerged victorious and established himself as the undisputed ruler of Rome. With the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra, the last remnants of opposition to Octavian's rule were crushed, bringing an end to the civil war that had torn Rome apart.
