Soil health is key to food security from "summary" of Growing a Revolution by David R Montgomery

The health of our soils is fundamental to the ability to feed ourselves. Soil health underpins human civilization; without it, we could not grow crops to feed our burgeoning population. Our society is built on the foundation of fertile soil, and if we continue to degrade it, we risk our ability to produce enough food for everyone. In order to ensure food security for future generations, we must prioritize the health of our soils. The conventional agricultural practices that have dominated our food production systems for decades have taken a toll on soil health. Tilling the soil, relying on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and monocropping have all contributed to the degradation of our soils. These practices have stripped the soil of essential nutrients, destroyed soil structure, and disrupted the complex ecosystem that supports plant growth. As a result, our soils have become less resilient and less able to support healthy plant growth. Transitioning to regenerative agricultural practices is essential for restoring soil health. By minimizing soil disturbance, increasing organic matter, diversifying crop rotations, and incorporating cover crops, farmers can rebuild soil health and increase its ability to support plant growth. These practices not only improve soil structure and fertility but also enhance the soil's ability to retain water and nutrients, making it more resilient to extreme weather events. Investing in soil health is a critical step towards achieving food security. Healthy soils produce healthy crops, which in turn nourish our bodies and sustain our communities. By prioritizing soil health, we can ensure that future generations have access to nutritious food and a stable food supply. It is time to recognize the fundamental importance of soil health in our quest for food security and take action to protect and restore this vital resource.
