Marriage proposal rejected due to poverty from "summary" of Godan by Munshi Premchand

In the village of Belari, Hori's daughter, Sona, was the apple of everyone's eye. She was a beautiful and intelligent girl, admired by all who laid eyes on her. Many young men in the village dreamed of marrying her, hoping to make her their bride. One such man was Kunvaria, a wealthy and educated man from a neighboring village. He was enamored by Sona's beauty and grace and decided to propose to her. Kunvaria's parents were also in full support of the match, seeing it as a way to improve their own social standing. However, Hori, Sona's father, knew the harsh reality of their situation. Despite his daughter's beauty and charm, he was a poor farmer struggling to make ends meet. He was aware that Kunvaria and his family would never accept the proposal once they learned of their poverty. When Kunvaria finally approached Hori with the proposal, he did so with a heavy heart. He knew that he had to reject the offer, as he could not bear the shame of being turned down due to his financial situation. Hori's pride and dignity would not allow him to subject his daughter to such humiliation. Despite his deep love for his daughter and his desire to see her happy, Hori had to make the difficult decision to turn down the proposal. It was a painful realization that in a society where wealth and social status held such importance, love alone was not enough to secure a marriage. And so, Sona's heart was broken as she watched Kunvaria and his family leave, their hopes of a prosperous union shattered by the harsh reality of poverty. Hori could only watch in silence, his heart heavy with the knowledge that his daughter's happiness had been sacrificed at the altar of societal expectations.
