Godan is a classic Hindi novel written by Premchand, first published in 1936. It is set in rural India during a time of great upheaval and is considered to be one of the great works of 20th century Indian literature. The novel follows the story of Hori, a poor tenant farmer who struggles to make ends meet in a society where social and economic divisions are increasingly becoming evident. Hori's situation is further complicated by the arrival of a money lender who seeks repayment of a loan, and by a drought that forces Hori to sell his cow, the only source of income for his family. In the face of adversity, Hori is forced to face some of lifeβs hard realities and tough moral decisions. Ultimately, Hori must choose between his own interests and the interests of his community. Godan is a powerful story that deals with themes of justice, inequality, and the struggle between tradition and modernity in India.
