Games involve power struggles and control from "summary" of Games People Play by Eric Berne, MD

In every game, there is a power struggle. Whether it is a game of chess, poker, or a psychological game, each player is vying for control. This struggle for power can manifest in various ways, through manipulation, deceit, or coercion. The players may not even be aware of the power dynamics at play, but they are always present beneath the surface. In psychological games, the power struggle is often more subtle. Players may use tactics such as passive-aggression, guilt-tripping, or playing the victim to gain the upper hand. The goal is always to control the situation and the other players involved. This need for control can stem from deep-seated insecurities or unresolved issues from the past. The power struggle in games is not always overt. It can be masked by humor, charm, or seemingly innocent banter. However, beneath the surface, there is always a battle for control. Players may engage in mind games, emotional manipulation, or power plays to assert their dominance. This constant struggle for power can lead to toxic dynamics and unhealthy relationships. The need for control in games is often driven by a fear of vulnerability or a lack of self-esteem. Players may use manipulation and power plays as a defense mechanism to protect themselves from getting hurt. However, this only perpetuates the power struggles and prevents genuine connections from forming.
  1. Games involving power struggles and control are ultimately self-destructive. They prevent true intimacy and connection from forming and perpetuate toxic patterns of behavior. It is only by recognizing and addressing these power dynamics that players can break free from the cycle and form healthier relationships.
