Selfcriticism can be detrimental to our mental health from "summary" of Feeling Good by David D. Burns

When we engage in self-criticism, we are essentially engaging in a form of negative thinking that can have a profound impact on our mental health. By constantly berating ourselves for our perceived shortcomings, we are feeding into a cycle of negativity that can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety. This self-critical voice can become so ingrained in our minds that we may not even realize how damaging it is to our overall well-being. Self-criticism can also lead to a distorted view of ourselves and the world around us. When we are constantly focusing on our flaws and failures, we are unable to see our positive qualities and accomplishments. This negative mindset can color our perceptions and lead us to discount or dismiss positive experiences, further fueling feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth. In addition to affecting our self-esteem, self-criticism can also impact our relationships with others. When we are overly critical of ourselves, we may find it difficult to accept love and support from those around us. We may push people away or become defensive when they try to offer help or encouragement, further isolating ourselves and deepening feelings of loneliness and despair. It is important to recognize the damaging effects of self-criticism and work towards cultivating a more compassionate and forgiving attitude towards ourselves. By challenging negative thoughts and practicing self-compassion, we can begin to break free from the cycle of self-criticism and improve our mental health. Learning to treat ourselves with kindness and understanding is a crucial step towards building a more positive and fulfilling life.
