Humans have evolved mechanisms for survival from "summary" of Evolutionary Psychology by David M Buss

Humans have been shaped by the forces of natural selection to solve an array of survival problems faced by our ancestors. These problems include finding food, selecting mates, navigating social alliances, avoiding predators, and caring for offspring. The human mind is a complex system with numerous specialized mechanisms designed to address these survival challenges. Evolutionary psychologists argue that the human brain consists of a large number of domain-specific modules, each dedicated to solving a particular adaptive problem. For example, humans have evolved mechanisms for detecting cheaters in social exchanges, for assessing the trustworthiness of potential allies, and for identifying kin in order to facilitate cooperation and prevent inbreeding. These mechanisms are not always consciously accessible, as they operate beneath the surface of conscious awareness. They are often activated automatically in response to specific cues or situations, guiding human behavior in ways that increase the chances of survival and reproduction. For example, humans may feel jealousy towards a romantic partner who shows interest in someone else, a response that likely evolved to prevent mate poaching and ensure reproductive success. Furthermore, evolutionary psychologists argue that many of these mechanisms are universal across human cultures, as they are rooted in our shared evolutionary history. While cultural differences certainly exist, there are also commonalities in human behavior that can be explained by the evolutionary pressures faced by our ancestors. For example, the incest taboo is found in virtually all societies, a finding that aligns with the evolutionary need to avoid inbreeding and its negative genetic consequences.
  1. The concept that humans have evolved mechanisms for survival is central to the field of evolutionary psychology. It provides a framework for understanding the adaptive functions of human behavior and cognition, shedding light on the ways in which our minds have been shaped by evolutionary processes. By studying these mechanisms, researchers can gain insights into the underlying causes of human behavior and the universal aspects of our psychology.
