Racial and social injustice are obstacles to democracy from "summary" of Democracy Matters by Cornel West

Racial and social injustice cut against the very core of democracy. When certain groups are systematically marginalized, oppressed, and excluded from full participation in society, it undermines the principles of equality and freedom that are essential to democracy. In a truly democratic society, every individual should have an equal voice and opportunity to contribute to the collective well-being. However, when racial and social injustices persist, it creates barriers that prevent certain groups from fully realizing their potential and exercising their rights as citizens. Democracy requires a commitment to justice and equality for all members of society. When racial and social injustices are allowed to persist, it breeds resentment, division, and mistrust among different groups. This erodes the social fabric and weakens the bonds that hold a democratic society together. Injustice not only harms those directly affected by it but also undermines the trust and solidarity that are necessary for a functioning democracy. As long as some members of society are denied their full rights and dignity, democracy remains incomplete and flawed. Moreover, racial and social injustice perpetuate power imbalances that distort the democratic process. When certain groups face systemic discrimination and are denied equal access to resources and opportunities, it skews the distribution of power in society. This leads to the concentration of power in the hands of a few privileged individuals or groups, while others are left marginalized and disenfranchised. In this way, racial and social injustices not only violate the principles of democracy but also hinder its proper functioning by preventing a truly inclusive and representative system of governance. In order to truly uphold the ideals of democracy, we must confront and address the deep-seated racial and social injustices that continue to plague our society. It is only by dismantling these barriers and creating a more just and equitable society that we can truly achieve a thriving democracy. As long as some members of society are held back by discrimination and inequality, the promise of democracy remains unfulfilled. It is only through a collective commitment to justice and equality that we can overcome these obstacles and build a society where all individuals can fully participate and thrive.
