The Dream thrives on generalization, on limiting the number of possible questions, on privileging immediate answers. The Dream is the enemy of all art, courageous thinking, and honest writing. And it is the only thing that racism has ever truly feared. The Dream is the need to be white, to be a part of the people who believe themselves to be white. The Dream is about the need to be brought into the fold of America, to be one of the "men" who are free. The Dream is the need to be a part of the great, ongoing, the historic inclusion. The Dream rests on the belief that they are white, that we are not, that I am white, that we are not. The Dream thrives on the erasure of history, on the denial of the racist practices that built this country, and on the insistence that those practices no longer affect our lives today. But the Dream is a lie, a delusion that only serves to perpetuate the suffering of black people in America. The Dream ignores the fact that slavery and segregation have left deep scars on the black community, scars that continue to shape our experiences and limit our opportunities.
