Cultural traditions are passed down through generations from "summary" of Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
In my family, cultural traditions were more than just practices we observed; they were the essence of who we were. Passed down through generations, these traditions were a way for us to connect with our past and honor the legacy of our ancestors. From the foods we ate to the rituals we followed, every tradition held a special significance that tied us to our heritage. One of the most important traditions in our family was the preparation of kimchi. This spicy, fermented cabbage dish was a staple in our household, and making it was a labor of love that required time, patience, and skill. I would watch my mother and grandmother work together in the kitchen, their hands moving deftly as they seasoned the cabbage and packed it into jars. Through their actions, I learned not just the recipe for kimchi, but the importance of preserving our cultural identity through food. Another tradition that was passed down through generations was the celebration of holidays. Whether it was Lunar New Year or Chuseok, our family would come together to honor these special occasions with food, music, and rituals that had been practiced for centuries. These celebrations served as a reminder of our roots and the values that had been instilled in us by our ancestors. But as I grew older and my mother's health began to decline, I realized that these traditions were more than just a connection to the past; they were a way for us to cope with the challenges of the present. In the face of illness and loss, the familiar rituals of our culture provided us with comfort and continuity. They were a source of strength that helped us navigate the difficult emotions that threatened to overwhelm us. As I reflect on the role that cultural traditions played in my life, I am struck by their power to shape our identities and sustain us in times of hardship. They are not just practices we observe out of habit; they are threads that bind us to our past and guide us into the future. In a world that is constantly changing, these traditions offer us a sense of stability and belonging that is priceless.Similar Posts
