We are constantly bombarded with messages telling us who we are and what defines us. Society tells us that our identity is found in our job, our possessions, our relationships, or our achievements. We are encouraged to seek validation and worth from external sources. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to a different standard. Our true identity is found in Christ alone. He is the one who created us, who knows us intimately, and who loves us unconditionally. When we try to find our identity in anything other than Him, we will always come up short. Our jobs, possessions, relationships, and achievements are all temporary and fleeting. They can never truly satisfy the longing in our hearts for something more. When we root our identity in Christ, we are grounded in something eternal and unchanging. We are seen as beloved children of God, redeemed and forgiven through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
