The ego, that sense of self that we cling to so fiercely, is the root cause of suffering in the world. It is the ego that separates us from one another, that drives us to compete and compare ourselves to those around us. This constant need to assert our individuality, to prove our worth, only serves to create division and discord. When we identify too strongly with our egos, we become consumed by our own desires and fears. We are constantly seeking validation from others, seeking to bolster our fragile sense of self-worth. This constant seeking leads to a never-ending cycle of craving and aversion, as we chase after fleeting pleasures and try to avoid pain at all costs. But the ego is a fickle master, constantly shifting and changing based on external circumstances.
