Humility and selflessness from "summary" of Bhagavad Gita by Stephen Mitchell

In the face of the infinite, the self is like a drop of water, insignificant and ephemeral. The wise person sees that everything is connected, and in this interconnected web of existence, the individual self is but a small part. This understanding leads to humility, a recognition of one's own limitations and impermanence. Humility is not a weakness, but a strength. It allows one to see beyond the narrow confines of the ego and to connect with a deeper truth. By letting go of the need to assert one's own importance, one can open up to a larger reality. This is the path to selflessness, to acting not out of selfish desires but out of a sense of duty and service to the greater good. Selflessness is the opposite of selfishness. It is the willingness to put others before oneself, to sacrifice personal gain for the well-being of all. This is the essence of true love, which sees no distinction between self and other. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna teaches that the truly wise person acts without attachment to the fruits of their actions. They do what is right because it is right, not for any personal gain. The practice of humility and selflessness is not easy. It requires a constant vigilance against the ego's tendency to assert itself, to put its own desires above all else. But through discipline and self-awareness, one can gradually overcome this tendency and cultivate a more compassionate and generous way of being in the world.
  1. Humility and selflessness are not just virtues to be cultivated, but the very essence of our true nature. When we let go of the illusion of the separate self and connect with the interconnectedness of all things, we realize that our own well-being is inseparable from the well-being of others. This is the path to true happiness and fulfillment, a life lived in harmony with the greater whole.
