Willpower is a finite resource that can be depleted from "summary" of Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin

Willpower is like a muscle that can become fatigued with use. Just as our physical strength can be exhausted by too much exertion, our willpower can also be depleted when we push ourselves too hard. This may seem counterintuitive, as we often think of willpower as an endless reservoir of self-control, but research has shown that it has its limits. Studies have demonstrated that when people are required to exert self-control in one area of their lives, such as resisting temptation or making difficult decisions, they are less able to muster the willpower needed for other tasks. This phenomenon, known as ego depletion, suggests that our capacity for self-discipline is not infinite but rather finite. When we deplete our willpower through one challenge, it becomes harder to maintain self-control in other areas. This can lead to a downward spiral of diminishing self-regulation, as our ability to resist temptation weakens with each exertion of willpower. It's like trying to lift a heavy weight after already exhausting our muscles – the task becomes increasingly difficult. Understanding that willpower is a finite resource can help us better manage our self-control. By recognizing when our willpower is low, we can take steps to replenish it, such as getting enough rest, eating well, and taking breaks when needed. We can also be more strategic in how we allocate our willpower, focusing on our most important goals and conserving our self-discipline for when it is truly needed. In the quest to cultivate better habits and make positive changes in our lives, it is essential to respect the limits of our willpower. By acknowledging that our self-control has its boundaries, we can work towards building sustainable habits that are not reliant on sheer force of will. Instead of trying to rely solely on our limited willpower, we can create environments and routines that support our goals and make it easier for us to stay on track.
