Let go of comparison and competition from "summary" of Being Zen by Ezra Bayda

When we compare ourselves to others, we create a division between ourselves and them. This division is based on judgments and evaluations, which ultimately lead to feelings of superiority or inferiority. In the end, comparison only serves to reinforce our sense of separateness from others. Similarly, when we engage in competition with others, we are engaging in a battle that ultimately has no winners. Competition is based on the idea that there is a limited amount of success or happiness to go around, and that we must fight to secure our piece of the pie. This mindset only serves to perpetuate a cycle of scarcity and fear. By letting go of comparison and competition, we can free ourselves from the shackles of our ego's need to constantly measure ourselves against others. We can learn to appreciate the unique qualities and strengths that each of us brings to the table, without feeling the need to compete for recognition or validation. When we release ourselves from the burden of comparison and competition, we can truly begin to embrace a sense of interconnectedness with all beings. We can recognize that we are all part of the same fabric of existence, each playing a unique role in the grand tapestry of life.
  1. By letting go of comparison and competition, we can cultivate a sense of inner peace and contentment that is not dependent on external validation or recognition. We can learn to appreciate ourselves for who we are, rather than constantly seeking approval from others. In this way, we can truly embody the spirit of Zen practice and live in harmony with ourselves and the world around us.
