The quadriceps femoris muscle is a powerful muscle located on the anterior aspect of the thigh. It consists of four parts: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius. These four parts come together to form a common tendon, known as the quadriceps tendon, which inserts into the patella. From the patella, the patellar ligament continues and attaches to the tibial tuberosity. When the quadriceps femoris muscle contracts, it causes extension of the knee joint. This means that the angle between the thigh and the leg increases. During extension, the leg straightens out. This action is crucial for various activities such as walking, running, and jumping.
