Ignorance is a tool of manipulation from "summary" of Animal Farm by George Orwell by George Orwell

In Animal Farm, the pigs use the animals' ignorance as a powerful tool to manipulate and control them. The pigs, being the most intelligent animals on the farm, take advantage of the others' lack of knowledge to maintain their own power and privileges. By keeping the other animals in the dark about certain events and decisions, the pigs are able to shape their perception of reality and maintain their hold over them. One example of this manipulation through ignorance is when the pigs change the Seven Commandments to suit their own needs. They secretly alter the commandments to benefit themselves, all the while convincing the other animals that nothing has changed. The animals, being unaware of the changes, continue to believe in the pigs' leadership and authority without questioning their actions. Another instance of ignorance being used as a tool of manipulation is when the pigs control the flow of information on the farm. They make sure to only reveal certain details that serve their interests, while withholding others that might challenge their power. By keeping the animals ignorant of the full truth, the pigs are able to prevent any uprising or rebellion against their rule. Furthermore, the pigs exploit the animals' ignorance by playing on their emotions and fears. They use propaganda and misinformation to incite feelings of anger, jealousy, and insecurity among the animals, thereby diverting their attention from the pigs' own corruption and incompetence. In this way, the pigs are able to manipulate the animals into following their lead without question.
  1. The pigs' manipulation of the animals' ignorance serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers of blind faith and unquestioning loyalty. It highlights how those in power can use the lack of knowledge to their advantage, leading to oppression and exploitation of the vulnerable. Through the use of ignorance as a tool of manipulation, Orwell paints a stark picture of the insidious nature of totalitarianism and the importance of critical thinking and awareness in resisting it.
